With the persistence of dangerous weather conditions today in the Bahamas, Prime Minister Hubert A. Ingraham called on residents to remain alert to weather warnings. Ingraham expressed his condolences for the loss of life and extensive material damage that caused a tornado yesterday in Freeport, Grand Bahama. For his part, Captain Stephen Russell, director of the National Emergency Care of the Bahamas, reported that at least three people were killed and four injured when the tornado hit and destroyed a port crane.
Trees were uprooted and broke windows of hotels when the storm moved across the island, located about 96 kilometers (60 miles) east of Florida. For its part, the Meteorological Department said this archipelago would continue for a few hours heavy storms mainly northern and central Bahamas. The weather event struck unexpectedly in Freeport and Lucaya Marina Villa so the authorities decided to close the pier for a few days to assess damage and try to fix the short term. This nation, consisting of about 30 islands, the Caribbean suffers as the Hurricanes, whose season runs from late summer through fall. However, experts say that a tornado has a greater effect of destruction that a hurricane, because the energy release is concentrated in a smaller area.
